Cajun Phil & Captain Kevin Broussard Win Redfish Cup Championship 2009
LAKE CHARLES, LA (September 2009) – Fresh off winning Redfish Cup 2009 Team of the Year two weeks ago, Redfish Cup veteran anglers Capt. Kevin and Cajun Phil Broussard from Lake Charles, LA, weighed in 9.27 pounds of redfish Sunday to be crowned kings of the Crown Royal Redfish Cup Championship presented by Academy Sports & Outdoors in Pensacola, Florida. They competed with the top 21 teams in this regular-season finale.
The father-son team’s high tide strategy paid off handsomely with a $50,000 check, championship trophies, a case of Mystik Lubricants JT4 marine oil and two bottles of Crown Royal XR. They were also presented with their Academy Team of the Year trophies presented by Crocs and a $10,000 check.
This was an emotional win for the father-son team. “I thought winning Team of the Year was as high as we could get,” said Captain Kevin Broussard. “It’s hard to believe all that we have accomplished this year and it means even more fishing with my dad. There is no ego there, nothing but love.” His father, Cajun Phil added,” It just doesn’t get any better than this. We love fishing in the Redfish Cup. We love fishing together, and that’s what family and love is all about.”
Fishing isn’t just a passion for the duo. It’s the family business. Cajun Phil Broussard started his TV show “Outdoors & Fishing” in 1968 with Kevin joining his dad as co-host at age seven in 1974. The show airs on FOX Sports Southwest Network reaching in excess of 20 million households every week. “We’re fortunate to have sponsors onboard who make great products that consistently give us a competitive edge. We’d like to thank the companies who’ve supported Team Broussard this year: American Rodsmiths, Sebile USA, Abu Garcia, Pure Fishing, Haynie Boats, Minn Kota, Hummingbird, Costa Del Mar, PowerPole Shallow Water Anchors, Hopkins Spoons, Bass Assassin Lures, Navionics, Yeti Coolers, Fishing Performance Chip and Justin Boots. We couldn’t have done it without them.”
Ultimately the Redfish Championship was decided on Day 3 with Broussards’ 9.27 pound catch delivering the crown. The Broussards were in fifth place heading into the final day of fishing and battled high tides alongside a field of accomplished competitors.
The Broussard duo has had quite a track record throughout the years in The Redfish Cup. The Broussards secured and maintained a strong position in the 2009 Team of the Year race by consistently weighing in the top 20 at every Redfish Cup tournament. They earned a fourth-place finish in Punta Gorda, FL; placed 18th in Kemah, TX; seventh in Chalmette, LA and 12th at the Biloxi, MS tournament. Cajun Phil & Captain Kevin were the runners up in the 2008 Academy Team of the Year race with a 10-point spread between them and Mark Sepe and Andrew Bostick. The 2008 season was possibly their most notable season with two second-place finishes in the Hopedale, LA and Port Arthur, TX tournaments, third-place in Port Aransas, TX and a fifth-place finish in the Championship. In 2007 Team Broussard won the Lafitte LA Redfish Cup. They have been named “ESPN Prime Time Players of the Year” and “Prime Time Players of the Week” on three separate occasions.
